What are our nurses saying?

I chose nursing as a career because of a promise I made to my grandfather when I was in high school that I would go to school to become a nurse so I could make him better. Over the years, I have matured and have realized that making someone better may include letting them go. I live to do the work that I do and do so with pride. I enjoy being able to help others. As a nurse and a nurse manager, I have been able to help my patients and my staff. I am an educator, a nurse, a healthcare provider, and a mentor. I am able to mentor nurses who will one day take care of me. As a nurse, I am able to give back to my community and show them that I care about each of them. Nursing and Oconee Regional Medical Center have given to me a lot more than I will ever be able to give back to them. I have gotten a sense of satisfaction and pride in the work that I do. I was born at Baldwin County Hospital (now Oconee Regional Medical Center). I graduated from high school in 1979 and became a messenger, a unit secretary, a nurse aide at Baldwin County Hospital. I graduated from Georgia College in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and became a registered nurse at Baldwin County Hospital. The hospital took me into its family, mentored me and gave me opportunities to fulfill my hopes, dreams and goals. In 1994, I became the nurse manager of the surgical floor at Oconee Regional Medical Center. Today, I have completed my Masters of Health Administration and continue to work as the nurse manager on 4 Park Tower (Medical/Surgical and Pediatric Unit). As I remind my staff often, we are family and we should treat ourselves, our patients and each other as family. I am able to care for my patients holistically which includes taking care of their family and friends. The “family environment” is what I love the most about working at ORMC.

Nurses are by nature very caring and giving individuals. It is heartwarming to be able to make a difference in the lives of clients and their families. Not only does the nurse at the bedside care for the physical needs of the client, but also can provide the emotional support that they need in a time of crisis. When you are caring for a patient, you need to remember to provide the kind of care you would wish your family member to receive. Even though things can become very hectic, at ORMC you do have the opportunity to provide quality care in a compassionate manner.
