Purpose : | | This test provides a general evaluation of your kidneys, ureter and urinary bladder. |
 | | |
Preparation: | | If you are a woman of childbearing age and there is a chance you may be pregnant, please consult your physician before scheduling this exam. Medications can be taken prior to your test. Pills should be taken with just a small amount of water, early in the morning.
You should not take insulin if you are fasting for your exam. However you should bring your insulin with you so you can take it after the exam. Also, when making your appointment, tell the scheduler if you are diabetic and request an appointment time early in the day.
NO FOOD OR LIQUIDS are to be taken after midnight the day before the exam.
A few days before your procedure, you should come to the radiology department and pick up a Fleet’s Barium Enema Prep Kit or you may purchase one at any local pharmacy. Follow the instructions for the 24-hour preparation. |
 | | |
Procedure: | | You will be asked to change into a hospital gown. A technologist will go over the consent and questionnaire with you. An x-ray of your abdomen will be taken and shown to the Radiologist. You will then receive and injection of x-ray contrast (x-ray dye) into one of your veins. This material will be absorbed by your blood and will allow your urinary tract to be visualized. A series of x-rays will be taken within the next 20 to 30 minutes to evaluate your kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder. |
 | | |
After Care: | | Resume your normal diet and drink plenty of water to flush the contrast material out of your system.
If you are a diabetic and take Glucophage (an oral hypoglycemic medication), you may take the medicine before the x-ray examination but cannot resume taking it for at least 48 hours after the study is completed. Also, you must call the doctor who ordered the study to find out when it is safe to resume taking Glucophage.
The radiologist’s report of the results will be sent to your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the results of the test with you.
