Applications are now being accepted for a healthcare scholarship which honors the memory of long-time Milledgeville physician Dr. Samuel M. Goodrich.  The award amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000, with preference given to Baldwin County residents.  To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a field of study related to healthcare and have completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework.

“This scholarship reflects the spirit of generosity for which Dr. Goodrich was well known,” said Ms. Pitirri-Wilson. “During his lifetime, he freely gave his time and resources to many worthy causes in our community. It’s wonderful to honor his legacy of helping others.”

The Goodrich Scholarship was given a boost on January 28th during a BBQ fundraiser held by the Oconee Regional Healthcare Foundation. The fundraiser featured sales of BBQ plates prepared by the Pig-in-a-Pit restaurant and served by ten volunteers from the Foundation.  Dr. Goodrich’s widow, Ellen, and his son, Alex, both helped in serving the 425 plates that were sold.  In addition to the $1,000 brought in by the plate sales, another $700 was received in donations to the scholarship.  The largest single donation was made by Century Bank & Trust Company, which purchased 53 BBQ plates to provide lunch for its entire staff.

“Community support for the Goodrich Endowed Healthcare Scholarship has allowed us to help deserving students succeed in their healthcare studies,” said Constance Pitirri-Wilson, Chair of the Oconee Regional Healthcare Foundation. “The scholarship is a fitting tribute to Dr. Goodrich, who was an esteemed practitioner of women’s health care in Milledgeville for 40 years.”

In September 2009, a total of $5,000 in Goodrich scholarships was awarded to two local nursing students, both of whom now work for Oconee Regional Medical Center.
