Purpose :
Semen analysis evaluates a man's sperm and semen. It is done to discover cause for infertility (http://www.answers.com/topic/infertility). It includes measurement of particular aspects of spermatozoa such as concentration, motility and morphology.
Preparation:
Two to seven (2-7) days abstinence from sexual activity is required for this test. These samples must be collected and returned to the lab before 1 pm Monday through Thursday. Do not collect on Friday.

Your physician will give you a collection kit, or you will pick it up at the Outpatient Laboratory at Oconee Regional Medical Center. Your semen specimen collection kit includes:
1 Graduated 15 ml tube (blue tip-Falcon tube)
1 – 50 ml tube containing semen dilution medium (pink)
1 specimen collection container
1 Ambient Transport Container
1 Orange Semen Analysis Card
1 Patient Collection Questionnaire
1 Mayo Clinic Lab Collection Lubricant
Procedure:
1. Put the dilution medium (pink) in the refrigerator until 45 minutes before collection. Take the dilution medium out of the refrigerator and allow to warm to room temperature for 30-45 minutes to liquefy.
2. Collect semen in the collection container. Let the specimen sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to liquefy.
3. Pour the specimen into the graduated 15 ml vial and write down the number closest to the blue line where the specimen meets the line. Record this number (total volume) on the orange card. The volume is required for accurate testing.
4. Pour the specimen into dilution media (pink), cap tightly and gently mix. The kit must be kept at room temperature during and after collection. This is critical.
5. Complete the patient collection questionnaire. This must be returned with the specimen for accurate recording and interpretation of results.
6. Place the specimen in the transport container in the box and return it to the Oconee Regional Medical Center as soon as possible after collecting, but it must be returned less than 6 hours after collection. Go to Outpatient Registration, and then deliver the specimen to the Outpatient Laboratory.
