You will report to the Admitting area on the 1st floor of Park Tower, Oconee Regional Medical Center.
Purpose :
A bronchoscopy is a procedure that can be used for diagnosis or treatment of various conditions. Your physcian can give you specific information as to why this procedure is being performed. A bronchcoscopy is a procedure in which the examiner (usually a pulmonologist or thoracic surgeon) uses a scope to evaluate the lungs and airways including the vocal cord, trachea and the branches of the lungs. If the physician deems it necessary, samples of lung tissue can also be taken and sent for examination to the lab.
Preparation:
Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight before your procedure. Follow your physician’s instructions about medications.
You will need to bring someone with you that can drive you home after your procedure.
Procedure:
This examination time varies depending on the reason for the procedure. An IV will be started for administration of medication to relax you. Continuous monitoring of the heart rate and blood pressure will be done during and immediately following the procedure. A local anesthetic will be used in the nose and back of throat. The bronchoscope will be introduced through either the nose or the mouth during the procedure.

You will be monitored until any medication that is given adequately wears off and it is determined that you can swallow safely. A family member or friend must drive you home. Your physician will discuss follow–up with you.
