Where:
You will report to the Radiology registration area on the 1st floor of Cobb Tower, Oconee Regional Medical Center with your doctor’s order. Please report to registration 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
Purpose :
This x-ray procedure is designed to evaluate your esophagus.
Preparation:
There is no special prep for this procedure.
Procedure:
You will be asked to change into a hospital gown. The procedure will start with you standing. The technologist may ask you to swallow granules that will produce air in your stomach. Next, you will begin swallowing liquid barium. During the course of the exam, you will be helped to turn in various positions to coat and visualize the gastrointestinal tract. A number of x-ray images will be obtained.
After Care:
You will be given a mild laxative such as Milk of Magnesia and asked to resume your normal diet and drink plenty of water.

The radiologist’s report of the results will be sent to your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the results of the test with you.
