Pain Management Mind/Body Treatment Program
Integrating Treatment for Maximizing Recovery from Work-related Injuries

A treatment program for patients with chronic pain that:
· Reduces discomfort, depression and anxiety
· Improves physical abilities
· Reduces unnecessary doctor visits

The Pain Management Mind/Body Treatment Program is an evidence-based, short term treatment program designed to speed and maximize recovery for the injured worker. Using cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness and acceptance treatment approaches, the Mind/Body Pain Management Program addresses the psychosocial risk factors that are known to lead to chronic pain syndrome and pain-related disability. These risk factors include fear of movement/re-injury, catastrophizing, perceived disability, job dissatisfaction motivational issues and emotional distress.

Pain Management
The Pain Management Mind/Body Treatment Program teaches patients the self-management strategies known to reduce pain, reduce reliance on narcotics and lead to functional improvement and appropriate activity. These strategies include relaxation training, biofeedback, mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy.

Disability Prevention
The Pain Management Mind/Body Treatment Program helps prevent the development of disability beliefs and behaviors. Throughout the program, participants will focus on resuming family, social and occupational roles.

Integrated Interdisciplinary Program Design
The Pain Management Mind/Body Treatment Program integrates with existing treatment, such as work conditioning programs, providing the benefits of a multidisciplinary pain treatment program without the costs. Treatment is coordinated with the patient’s health care providers, nurse case manager and others involved in the patient’s care.

Each patient will undergo a brief assessment to determine the treatment options to meet his/her specific needs. If appropriate for the Mind/Body Pain Management Program, the patient will meet for a maximum of 10 sessions in either an individual or group format, depending on identified needs. Health care providers are apprised of weekly progress and are given recommendations that will lead to their patients’ optimal recovery.

Evidence-Based Treatment Design
Research shows that when integrated with work conditioning, Mind/Body Pain protocols result in:
· Sixty-percent increased return to work rate
· Reduction in unnecessary physician visits
· Forty-percent reduction in pain levels
· Reduced narcotic use
· Fifty-percent reduction in depression
· Reduced unnecessary diagnostic testing
· Increased patient, employer and insurer satisfaction with treatment
