Making A Gift To The Hospital
Sharing Our Mission Through Charitable Giving
Our community's generosity is vital to our mission to provide access to optimal health care. Donations from our patients, friends, and co-workers help us keep pace with the rapid advancement of health care technology while reducing our reliance on expensive debt. They help us provide preventative services which are not covered by insurances and medical care for people who cannot afford it. At the same time, these donations help individuals and businesses create lasting tributes to important people in their lives. These gifts highlight the donor's generosity and may qualify for charitable tax deductions.

Our history dates back to 1883 with the creation of the first "St. Albans Hospital." A second independent hospital, "Kerbs Memorial", opened in 1949. Chauncey Warner and Jeanne Kerbs were the primary benefactors whose generosity created each hospital. Nearly thirty years later, the two facilities merged and became Northwestern Medical Center. Renovation projects and equipment modernization - funded in large part by charitable donations - have kept us young despite our age. The NMC family is proud to have you consider sharing our mission through a charitable donation to the hospital.

Would you like to make a gift to NMC? Click here to access our on-line secure donation form. If you have any questions or would like more information, please call Jennifer Savage, our Community Relations Specialist at (802) 524-1239 or click here to email Jennifer directly.

Memorial & Honor Gifts:
A charitable donation can be a wonderful, meaningful way to honor a special person. Families and friends have memorialized loved ones. Companies and co-workers have honored retirees. Gifts have been given on behalf of "the person who has everything." Gifts have been given to fund specific hospital services which have particular meaning to the donor. These gifts receive special attention in our Annual Report.

The "Tree of Life":
The "Tree of Life" is a beautiful maple tree sculpture in the hospital lobby. It is a striking piece of art which displays the names of major donors and those who have been honored by major gifts. The "Tree of Life" consists of a hand-carved maple trunk and branches. It has 300 engraveable brass "leaves" which commemorate gifts of $1,000 or more. At the base of the tree are 12 engraveable "stones" to honor gifts of $5,000 or more. These gifts may be made as cash donations or as pledges for up to three years.

Planned Giving:
Through gifts in wills, life insurance policies with the hospital as the benefactor, and other such planned gifts, individuals can ensure that their charitable spirit lives on. Individuals of all income levels can maximize their charitable giving while strategically managing their finances. We would be happy to provide you with more information about the many benefits of planned giving.

The Jim Bashaw Cancer & Catastrophic Illness Fund:
Jim Bashaw was a beloved teacher, guidance counselor and long-time girls' basketball coach at BFA St. Albans. His death in August of 2000 from brain cancer affected not only his family and friends, but the entire community. In honor of Jim's memory, a fund was established to provide financial assistance to residents of Franklin and Grand Isle Counties who are experiencing catastrophic illness from cancer or other causes.

The Martin H. Wennar, MD Health Education Fund:
The NMC Health Professions Scholarship Program Benefit Dinner has been providing scholarships to youth in our community seeking careers in the health care field since 1987. In 2003, the Fund was rededicated to Dr. Wennar, in honor of his long standing commitment to encouraging health professions through scholarships. For more information about these scholarships, visit Pursuing Health Care Careers in the Joining our Staff section of this site.

In May of 2006, Dr. Wennar announced that he would be making a significant contribution to help sustain these scholarships long-term. A press release announcing this gift is located in our Communications Archive.

The Sowles Free Care Fund:
Caring for the poor and uninsured in our community is a central component of our mission at NMC: to provide access to optimal healthcare in our community. The Sowles Free Care Fund was established in 1954 to support our ability to provide care for those who can't afford the care they need.

The NMC Employee Emergency Fund:
When an NMC employee has a personal crisis, the entire hospital family is affected. By providing financial assistance from this fund to our employees in need, the hospital family is able to come together outside of the professional realm to support our employees and their families.
