Surgical Pathology

Surgical pathology is the study of the nature and cause of disease. Tissue is examined under a microscope with basic stains for routine histology; sometimes preparations of frozen sections and special stains may be needed. Frozen sections are performed while the patient is in the operating room, when the physician needs a diagnosis right away, to decide how to proceed with the surgery. A piece of the tissue is sent to pathology and a quick stain is performed. The pathologist will contact the surgeon in the operating room and deliver the report, usually within 20 minutes.
