Laboratory Receives Accreditation from College of American Pathologists

Urologist, Dr. Alisa Berger, Earns Board-Certification
Alisa Berger, MD of Brazosport Urology has earned her Board Certification from the American Board of Urology. Throughout the entire year of 2008, only 249 urologists from across the country were able to successfully pass the certification exam. Click here to read more about Dr. Berger.
Brazosport Regional Welcomes New Neurologist to the Brazosport Community

Brazosport Regional Implements Technology to Improve Patient Safety
Brazosport Regional Health System implements a new process which will ensure patient safety during medication administration. The new process, Bedside Medication Verification (BMV), allows caregivers to utilize bar code scanning technology to match patients to their medicine and act as a safety net to check for errors prior to the patient receiving the drug. BRHS Standardizes Uses of Wristbands - Volunteer Effort Protects Patients
Imagine this scenario: Hospital workers almost fail to rescue a patient who has a cardiopulmonary arrest because the patient had been incorrectly designated as DNR (do-not-resuscitate). The source of confusion was a yellow wristband placed on the patient by a nurse. In that hospital, a yellow wristband meant DNR. In a nearby hospital where the nurse also worked, yellow was used to indicate “restricted extremity,” meaning that the arm is not to be used for drawing blood or for an IV line. Fortunately, another nurse recognized the mistake, and the patient was resuscitated. Click here to read more.

Executive Chef at BRHS Wins Medals at Culinary Competition

Cardiologist Performs First Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
Dr. Alpesh Shah, Medical Director, Cardiac Catheterization Lab and a member of the Brazosport Cardiology Group performed Brazosport Regional’s first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Brazosport Regional Performs 1st Lap Band Surgery to Combat Local Residents Obesity
Lake Jackson resident Cole Grimes has suffered from obesity for years, and as a result of his weight problem, he hasn’t had the energy to play with his kids. However, after undergoing LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System surgery, a safer and less invasive surgery than gastric bypass, he will be able to join his kids in Karate class. Brazosport Regional Health System is gearing up for their annual FREE flu shot immunization clinics for southern Brazoria County. Each year, approximately 5%-20% of U.S. residents contract the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. An annual flu shot is the best way to reduce the chances of acquiring the virus. FREE Prostate Screening Exams at Brazosport Regional Cancer Center
Brazosport Regional Cancer Center is offering FREE Prostate Screening Exams on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. The exams are solely for the early detection of prostate cancer and will be administered by board-certified radiation oncologists and urologists. Local Hospitalist Receives High Honors
Brett McFadden, MD, FACP, a hospitalist and internist practicing at Brazosport Regional Health System, has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists and internal medicine subspecialists. Hand Therapist Receives 2008 Shining Star Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Hand Therapist
Congratulations to Peggy Boineau, OTR, CHT, Hand Therapist at Brazosport Regional Outpatient Rehabilitation Services for receiving the 2008 Shining Star Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT). Local Gastroenterologist Receives High Honors

Nearly 1.4 million Americans were diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and according to the Texas Department of Health Services, approximately 1,166 new cases of cancer arose in Brazoria County.
