Brazosport Health Foundation Receives Komen Houston Affiliate Grant for Children’s Books in Area Libraries

Thanks to a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Houston Affiliate, Brazosport Health Foundation will present children’s breast cancer awareness books to the Brazoria County Library System.

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, her life takes a new direction – one focused on health and healing. But when that woman has children at home, she often faces the added pain of coping with the illness through the eyes of her children. In an effort to provide a free resource for women and their families to sensitively and simply explain breast cancer, the books will be placed in the nine southern branches of the Brazoria County Library System. These branch libraries are located in Alvin, Angleton, Brazoria, Clute, Danbury, Freeport, Lake Jackson, Sweeny, and West Columbia.

The books, which are written for children preschool-age through twelve-years-old, were chosen in a joint effort between the Foundation and the Library System staff to include recent and relevant material.

“A book can sometimes help a parent explain a difficult situation. Thanks to The Mermaid Project and the Brazosport Health Foundation, the Brazoria County Library System will now have the resources to help these families during their time of need,” said Cathy Threadgill, Director of the Brazoria County Library System.

Patty Green, Executive Director of Brazosport Health Foundation, is pleased to add a new dimension to The Mermaid Project initiative. “Thanks to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Houston Affiliate we have made great strides in the screening and treatment of breast cancer for women living in Southern Brazoria County. Now we can provide a resource for children whose lives are touched when there is a diagnosis of breast cancer.”

The Mermaid Project is an outreach program of Brazosport Health Foundation that provides free mammograms and breast cancer diagnostics and treatment to low-income, uninsured women residing in Southern Brazoria County.
