Cytopathology
Cytopathology is the study of cellular changes in disease. Fluids from various sites such as the breast, thyroid, chest cavity and abdominal cavity can be examined. Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA) are a form of Cytopathology. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is usually performed by a pathologist or radiologist. The FNA is ordered by your physician for superficial lesions that the patient and/or physician can feel. For lesions that are hard to feel, an ultrasound guided FNA is performed by the radiologist. The cells are examined under a microscope to determine malignancy.
